Bright colours, patterns and fabrics bring this space to life

This is the seventh instalment this year of my case study series where I write about recently finished projects each with a different focus, brief, and style.

This project was a complete home renovation. It’s a 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom property that has an open kitchen, dining and living space. The owners had many pieces of furniture that they wanted to keep so my job was to design the kitchen and bathroom, colour palette selection for the whole home, lighting, flooring and window coverings as well as cabinetry for all rooms including new robes. I then sourced any pieces of furniture, soft furnishings and artwork that were required such as bed and bedhead along with bedside cabinets, rug, entertainment unit and coffee table for the lounge room and soft furnishings throughout.

Beautiful fabrics simply used as cushions are super effective

We chose bamboo flooring for downstairs and a plush neutral coloured carpet for upstairs. We kept the palette neutral adding pops of colour and pattern through the rug, cushions and artwork. The window covering are all roman blinds for softness with a sheer curtain in the dining room to frame the new French doors with black frames. These are a real feature at the back of the house that open into the new courtyard space.

A simple kitchen for a smaller space is the best way to go. Contrast using darker cabinetry at the bottom

The kitchen and bathroom designs were kept traditional with the addition of The English Tapware Company vanity with a stone top. The black and white floor tiles are a real feature in this bathroom. In the kitchen we used the same stone and varied the cabinetry colour for interest. Again the tapware was kept traditional but with the simple cabinetry doors the space feels fresh and modern.

That’s all for the completed projects for this year, look out for new projects in my portfolio in 2014. Until then, if you have any thoughts on the above feel free email me at

Happy decorating.
