How to Enhance a Room with Wallpaper

May 22, 2017 | Anoushka's Blog, Interior design and decoration

It’s been around for centuries…from traditional and classic to bold and graphical, wallpaper can make a serious interior impact, regardless of whether it’s in or out of vogue.

While it was once considered background rather than foreground decor (with some notable exceptions), wallpaper has always played a big role in enhancing interior design.  With today’s tremendous options, the choice of wallpaper and the way it’s used can influence the overall decorative scheme of a space in a big way.

The famous Cole & Son Woods wallpaper

It is certainly one way to enhance a room design with a bit of dramatic “wow!”, a graphical element or a touch of modernism or class.  It offers another layer of colour, pattern and texture; while drawing attention to a prominent wall, niche, or the whole room (if you’re brave).

And the creative use of wallpaper doesn’t just apply to the print; how and where it’s hung plays its part.  Don’t overlook nooks, recesses, shelving areas, ceiling’s (although not my favourite), or even using it to re-purpose old furniture. Getting creative and using wallpaper in imaginative ways can really vary a look.

As we’re seeming in current design trends, if nature is your thing, you don’t need to be limited to bringing the outside in. Floral prints, woodland scenes, and palm prints can evoke a colourful natural feel and a sense of calm in a room.

Wallpaper goes way beyond what can be done with painted finishes.  And while I enjoy and like to mix paint and wallpaper appearances, paint can’t compete with the luxury and opulence a few rolls of wallpaper can provide.

When my clients are looking for ways get a ‘wow’ factor, without having to add more costly items, such as tiles, stone or expensive textile fabrics; wallpaper can be a great option.  We can play up the theme by using a geometric black and white print in a scandi design or even take a less is more approach and play up modernity in larger-scale pattern or a textural grassweave for a classic but elegant enhancement.
