Forestville 2 Home Renovation – Anoushka Allum Design

Hi All. I mentioned before Christmas when posting my Brooklyn project that I had been photographing a couple of finished homes at the end of last year. This wonderful family home in was the second project that completed at the end of last year. I’ve been posting a few images over on Instagram of the kitchen, but wanted to show you a full reveal here with some before and after’s. This one is a hard one to visualise before as the floor plan has so radically changed. So I’m going to picture the before and after floor plans to help you out!

The focus of this renovation was to create a more open plan home. The clients had already landscaped and have a fabulous garden and pool area, but they were lacking connection to house. They also wanted a much larger kitchen area with separate butlers pantry. The clients also wanted to add in a main bedroom suite with walk in robe and ensuite. Julie from JAH came up with a new floor plan to capture the wish list, and then her and I worked together to tweak this to ensure we gave the clients everything they dreamed of. See below the before and after floor plan to give you an idea. This wasn’t a small project. The stairs up to this floor were also non-compliant so we needed to rework the entry and stairs area into the home.

The vibe of the home was to be modern Hampton’s with a large smattering of deep blue, my client’s favourite colour! Also to create a sense of space with generous proportions which delivered quite a magnificent vaulted ceiling feature in the main bedroom. The main living space needed to be super comfortable for a family of 5 and 2 dogs, and as I talked about earlier that flow to the outside patio and swimming pool was a must.

After: Indoor outdoor connection

After: Vaulted ceiling in main bedroom

Working from home is important to this family, with one room already dedicated as an office and often in full use, we needed to find another working space. So, we created this long desk area in the main bedroom for the one or two days a week that it might be needed.

This project had its challenges, coming off the back of Covid, materials shortages, weather stops as we needed a new roof above the new extended main bedroom and many other challenges along the way. However, with hard work, persistence and amazing communication to the client from my building team we got there, and created this magical home along the way.

Before: old living room now kitchen

After: New kitchen with butlers pantry and laundry behind

Communication is key in this environment when renovating and having a team on board that really cares. Meet Amanda from Butopia (the main builders on this project), she was integral on this project in keeping the communication lines open and regularly updated back to myself and the client, especially through the harder times and the big final push to get the family back in.
