How many cushions is too many?

I’ve recently been working with a male client who lives in an apartment just he and his son. We decorated every room except my clients bedroom. He just didn’t feel that we could add much to this space, and he didn’t feel it was important. Of course I disagreed. After putting so much time effort and money into the rest of his apartment I wanted my client to have a bedroom that he could retreat to, relax in and enjoy.

We had already laid fresh carpet in a beautiful soft grey, and new blinds in charcoal and white. He had a bed, a pretty standard bedside and a floor lamp but that was it. The bed linen was looking tired, and the duvet and pillows had seen better days. I convinced him to invest in some simple decorating, a bedhead, new bedside and light, bedding and bed linen. When it came to decorative pillows there was definite hesitation. In my experience men don’t want to have to pull 6 pillows off of the bed at night just to get into it – I get that! In fact I don’t like to over dress beds, simplicity is key with crisp white sheets being my signature look. So I convinced him to go with one large simple bolster pillow and one simple bed sash to finish the look. I think you’ll agree this is a huge improvement and now feels like a finished bedroom with a masculine touch.

I’m still working on convincing him on the artwork….wish me luck 😉
