HOW TO STYLE PART 5 – STYLING YOUR ENTRY CONSOLE

May 1, 2023 | Anoushka's Blog, Interior design and decoration

Part 5 in my how to style series is focussed on styling your entry table or console. But this could also be useful for any console or buffet in your home. These pieces of furniture are made for styling. They can create a focal point in a room or entry and I always think about how you can style around them too. Here are my main points to think about for this area of your home.

Styling the surface of your console/buffet

There are often 3 or 4 main elements that I think about introducing here, and it does depend on the size of the surface that you have to play with. For instance I always try and add something in that’s organic like flowers or a plant at one end of the piece, make the pot or vase interesting. Then I layer up with a table lamp if there’s space and/or if it’s needed depending on where this piece of furniture is sitting. I then decorate with a mixture of elements. Think about selecting 2 or 3 of the following to add interest and texture. Mix scale, materials and colour for more interest and you dont have to include all of these elements sometimes less is more:

  • Books (either one large book or a stack of 2 or 3)
  • Photo frames (can be placed on top of your books)
  • Decorative pieces like objects of interest, crystals, candles
  • A great vessel or two (vases or bowls)
  • Candle holders

Styling above your console

Here you could choose between a mirror or artwork. My rule is that whatever the piece it’s at least half the size of the console but preferrable to have it 2/3rd of the width of the console. This allows you to overlap your lamp or plant in front of the artwork or mirror for it all to feel connected. I also like to ensure the mirror or art picks up on colour or materials that appear in the furniture and pieces below.

Styling around your console

Here don’t be afraid to add in more layers. You could dress with a stool to one side, especially in an entry where you want somewhere to sit to take your shoes on and off. Ora floor standing plant, something large that sits up higher than the console itself. Also baskets under the console if you have clear space and umbrella stands are all great items to complete your look.
