Marimekko opens in Sydney

Happy new year everyone. I hope you enjoyed a festive holiday.

Whilst spending time relaxing over the past few weeks I got a chance to visit the new Marimekko store here in Sydney. Most of you have at least heard of this fabulous Finnish company who is so well known for its iconic designs and prints and original fabrics using strong patter and colour, all creating a range of clothing and textiles that is truly unique to the Marimekko brand. Established in 1962 by Armi Ratia, she is renowned as one of the most successful female entrepreneurs in Finland.

Although here in Australia many distributers had been importing this range over the past few years, at last we now have direct access to not just the fabrics but they unique clothing designs for both adults and children. With a new store that opened in December at 66 King St in Sydney’s CBD, and also a store on Chapel St in Melbourne access to these gorgeous designs is now so much easier.

I’m excited to use some of the fabrics in my designs and have just this week ordered the iconic Tuuli fabric cushions for one of my clients on the North shore. This design was based on a monochromatic colour scheme of black, white and grey so the black and white fabrics were a perfect fit for the overall scheme. I’m looking forward to seeing this design come together at the end of January and will post some pictures once it’s finished. In the meantime take a look at some of these images that I took of the Sydney store when I visited before Christmas. If you like what you see make time to visit as it’s the most fantastic store!
