Brief
The brief for this family home was all about creating a more open, connected ground floor while making better use of the existing space. The original kitchen felt quite enclosed from the main living area, so we opened it up to create a more seamless connection between the kitchen and living spaces. A hidden pantry and bar were also introduced, adding practical storage and a little extra functionality.
We also saw an opportunity to create a more generous main bedroom suite. With three other living spaces already in the home, the small living room adjoining one of the bedrooms made much more sense as part of the main suite. By dividing the space, we were able to create both a walk-in robe and ensuite, giving the home a much more functional layout without increasing its footprint.
Design
Working with the classic heritage of the home, we wanted to retain as many of the original features as possible while introducing a new kitchen that felt naturally connected to the character of the house. The kitchen was part of a newer addition at the rear of the home and previously felt quite contemporary against the original architecture. We softened this contrast through the use of decorative cornices and skirtings, Shaker-style joinery and aged brass fixtures, bringing a sense of heritage and warmth into the space.
A considered palette of dark oak flooring, soft grey-greens and brass accents creates a calm, timeless feel. The result is a home that respects its heritage while still feeling fresh, relaxed and suited to modern family living.
