Earlier this year I was engaged on a lovely project to create an open living space for a family based in Cremorne, Sydney. The space originally split into three areas, living, dining and kitchen felt very closed with walls separating each area. My brief was to assist with the design of the new floor plan opening up the space and creating a larger family kitchen.
We started by removing the walls to open up the space, replaced the floors throughout with timber to create flow and the sense of consistency. In the kitchen the design was super important as the foot print of the kitchen was going to be large, it would be the main feature of the living space. My client wanted the kitchen to feel close to nature in terms of colours and materials, a calm light and fresh design was part of the brief. To gain more light into the space the back patio doors were widened, a skylight was added above the kitchen and a mixture of recessed lights, pendants and under cabinetry task lighting was installed creating a beautiful, light and spacious kitchen/dining area. We used a natural colour palette, creating a feature through the backsplash and use of colour on the kitchen island.
The design feels very balanced and calm, but interesting with the unexpected use of colour on the island. My client is so happy with the outcome, it’s now a space to enjoy cooking, entertaining and hanging out with family and friends.
This is my last post before the Christmas break. So have a wonderful Christmas and New Year, and I’ll be back in 2015 with more inspiration and finished projects.
