I always get asked by clients and friends how do I keep my interior designs fresh? where does the inspiration come from for each project? That’s kind of hard to answer because many things impact the choices I make when bringing finishes, materials, and furnishings together in a home. From the style of the home, to my client’s personality and brief and what’s inspiring me at any given moment, all of these things mash together to become the inspiration for a project.
We are also so bombarded with imagery online. Think about how many images we take in through our mobile devices, constantly checking our feeds, Facebook, Instagram etc. It’s no wonder that inspiration hits us constantly. In fact it can feel quite overwhelming especially in the interior design space with blogs, TV shows and magazine Facebook pages, supplier Facebook pages and most importantly Houzz and Pinterest having such a strong presence it’s hard not to be inspired. So how do you sort through it all?
I always advise my clients to choose one platform, it could be online like Houzz or Pinterest where you save your favourite images to a board or ideabook. Or it could simply mean taking screenshots and saving them on your device. Rarely are my clients using pull outs from magazines, scrapbooks, or mood boards.
For me I’m a screenshot saver! I love Houzz and Pinterest don’t get me wrong, and I use them all the time. However I do like how quick I can screenshot something and I’ve created a library of folders depending on the image so I can file them away for later. I use these all the time when trying to describe an idea to a client, I also use these as reference points when seeking inspiration. Below are some of my recent favourites, I hope these help inspire you to get more organised with your ideas…..
